Organization Overview

The UCD Institute of Food and Health

The UCD Institute of Food and Health is an academic institution based in University College
Dublin, established in 2008. The Institute is a collaborative organisation with a team of highly
skilled academic staff and students across multiple disciplines to conduct research.
Our vision is to be a global leader in the scientific discovery that shapes the future of food
and health.
The UCD Institute of Food and Health has a reputation for excellence in research, bringing
together the best of UCD in the food and health space. Our 66 Principal Investigators
(faculty), over 40 post-doctoral researchers and fellows, and 150 students are drawn from
across UCD for their multidisciplinary expertise in food and health research. We take a
holistic approach to future-proofing global food systems, covering five key areas.
The Institute works with industry partners and agencies to deliver high-impact research at
UCD. There are five research areas:
1. Food Safety
2. Food Sustainability
3. Primary Production Systems
4. Food Innovation and Quality
5. Nutrition and Health
Our 2020-2024 strategy goals are outlined as follows:
To become an international leader in food and health research through successful
competition for funding and the development of best-in-class personnel and facilities.
1. To increase relationships and collaborations with leading international research
institutions.
2. To develop educational and training programmes in food and health.
3. To translate research to impact positively on the economy, industry and society.
4. To develop and communicate the Institute’s brand to support and underpin the Institute in
its work.
